Six Countdown/GTA 6 facts/File size

How big is GTA 6?

Every install-size and map-size figure doing the rounds, in one table — each one tagged confirmed, estimate or rumour, with the source it came from. No guesses dressed up as facts.

Short answer

Rockstar has not published an install size for GTA 6. As of August 25, 2026 there is no official number on the Rockstar Newswire, the PlayStation Store listing or the Xbox store listing.

Everything currently circulating — 200 GB, 300 GB, “nearly 700 GB” — traces back to forum posts and social screenshots, not to Rockstar or the platform holders. The first reliable number will appear on the store pages when preload opens on November 12, 2026, one week before launch.

Our working estimate, based on Red Dead Redemption 2 (~150 GB installed) plus a decade of texture-resolution growth: 150–200 GB.

01Every claim, tracked

This is the part nobody else does. Each figure gets a status, so you can see at a glance which ones are worth clearing disk space for and which are somebody’s screenshot of somebody’s tweet.

02How much space to free up

Consoles need headroom beyond the install itself — patch staging, save data and the copy-on-install buffer. Plan for the install size plus roughly 15 %.

PlatformUsable storageFree upComfortable?
PlayStation 5825 GB model, ~667 GB usable667 GB230 GBFine
Xbox Series X1 TB, ~802 GB usable802 GB230 GBFine
Xbox Series S512 GB, ~364 GB usable364 GB230 GBTight
Xbox Series S 1 TB~802 GB usable802 GB230 GBFine
Series S owners: at 200 GB installed you would be handing over more than half the console’s usable storage to one game. If the rumoured 300 GB figure turns out to be real, the base 512 GB Series S cannot hold GTA 6 alongside Call of Duty at all. Worth deciding now whether an expansion card is on the shopping list.

03Map size: Leonida vs Los Santos

Different question, and a messier one — Rockstar has never published a square-kilometre figure for any of its maps. Every number below is community measurement, which is why none of them carry a green tag.

GameLandmassStatusNote
GTA VLos Santos + Blaine County~76 km²CommunityMeasured in-engine by modders; Rockstar never confirmed
Red Dead Redemption 2Five states~75 km²CommunityComparable landmass, far lower density
GTA 6State of LeonidaUnknownNo official figure; trailer footage is not measurable
“Twice the size of GTA V”The claim you keep seeing~150 km²RumourOriginates from the 2022 leak, not from Rockstar
Why square kilometres is the wrong question anyway. Leonida is confirmed to hold six distinct regions including Vice City, and Rockstar’s own material stresses interiors and density rather than raw acreage. A map half the size of RDR2 with three times the enterable buildings is the bigger game. Take the km² debate as entertainment, not planning.

04How we got to 150–200 GB

  • GTA V, 201372 GB on PS4 at launch. Baseline for a Rockstar open world of that generation.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2, 2018~150 GB installed on console. Roughly double GTA V five years later, driven by 4K textures and uncompressed audio.
  • GTA 6, 2026Eight years past RDR2, but with hardware texture decompression on PS5 and Xbox Series, which claws back a chunk of what higher resolution costs. Doubling again is unlikely; 150–200 GB is the honest range.

We will replace this estimate with the real number the moment preload opens on November 12 — and we will leave the estimate visible next to it, so you can judge how much our maths is worth.

05Questions people actually ask

Is GTA 6 really 700 GB?

Almost certainly not. The figure comes from a screenshot of a supposed Xbox store listing that no one has been able to reproduce on a live page. No game has ever shipped at that size; the largest mainstream release to date sits under 250 GB. Treat it as noise until it appears on an actual store page.

When will we know the real file size?

When preload opens on November 12, 2026. Store pages publish the download size at that point, and it becomes visible to anyone who has pre-ordered. We will update this page the same day.

Will GTA 6 fit on a base Xbox Series S?

At our 150–200 GB estimate, yes, but it will take more than half your usable 364 GB. You will be uninstalling something. If you want headroom, an expansion card or the 1 TB Series S is the safer route.

Do I need an SSD for GTA 6 on PC?

Rockstar has not announced PC requirements or a PC release date. Every recent Rockstar title has listed an SSD as recommended rather than required, but for GTA 6 this is unconfirmed — see our PC requirements page for what we can and cannot say.

How big is the GTA 6 map in km²?

Unknown, and nobody outside Rockstar can currently answer it. The widely repeated “twice the size of GTA V” traces to the 2022 leak, not to any Rockstar statement. Reliable measurements only become possible once players can drive the map.
